Conceived by Holscher Design, the collection is formed of two independent cylindrical volumes whose intuitive movement allows light to be directed with complete freedom, providing everything from subtle accents to broader illumination.Pro was born from a desire to reimagine the traditional spotlight as an architectural lighting tool. The designers set out to capture the functionality of a technical spotlight within a simpler, more unified design that could integrate seamlessly into any architectural environment. Achieving this meant stripping the design right back to its essential components. “Traditional spotlights have different parts: the reflector casing, the transformer casing, two joints, a bracket and an adapter. We wanted to get rid of all unnecessary details and design a unified body.”They developed a hidden mechanism that integrated the technical elements of the spotlight into a sculptural yet understated expression. The result is a technically refined collection that maintains the visual purity of an objective luminaire. It sits naturally within any interior without competing with its architecture, allowing the light itself to take centre stage. “We wanted to create a light that would be a friend to architecture… rather than a technical device.”Integrating a wide range of technical capabilities, Pro allows professionals to create diverse scenes according to their creative vision. Suitable for use across residential interiors, galleries and large public spaces, it delivers everything from precise accent lighting to soft ambient illumination while maintaining an soft, understated architectural presence. “You don’t expect such a strong performance from a very restrained and distilled little spotlight like Pro, but it’s surprisingly powerful and can do everything compared with all other high end spotlights.”Throughout the process, the designers sought to distill the complexity of a highly technical product into something intuitive, but also playful. From the very first sketch, the collection was conceived as two cylinders connected through their contrasting concave and convex geometries. “As architects and designers, we know that the most simple is the most difficult. Pro consists of nothing but these two cylinders. If we couldn’t solve this little detail, there would be nothing left.”“They slide into each other. It’s kind of magic, the movement. Almost like the sun moving across the hemisphere… This movement is actually very technical, but it isn’t perceived as technical. It gives the spotlight a distinctive character.”Achieving this perceived simplicity required multiple rounds of prototyping, experimentation with different proportions, and close collaboration with Vibia’s R&D team to conceal the mechanics behind the movement. “The workshops we had, the cooperation, the back and forth was fantastic. We were always rowing in the same direction with the same vision.”The designers eventually saw an opportunity in incorporating a stand-alone version as a way of introducing directional light from below to create another kind of tension or mood in the space while maintaining the collection’s understated design language. “You can place Pro anywhere, even on the floor. You don’t often see that in a spotlight family. Somehow it becomes even less technical and more of a presence.”Pro was conceived as a playful, precise, and minimalistic collection. Distilled to just two key components with no visible brackets or joints, its movement brings a sense of character and mystery, while the complexity of its concealed technical features enables exceptional performance and precision, transforming it into an essential architectural tool.
