The advent of cutting-edge LED technology has dramatically affected lighting over the past decade. No longer driven by a particular lighting source, designers now have free reign to experiment with form and special effects. We asked some of our favourite designers to discuss the ways LEDs have influenced their work, from innovation and lighting precision to energy efficiency and more.<\/p>\n

Mart\u00edn Az\u00faa<\/a>, who created Vibia\u2019s Halo<\/strong><\/a> pendant, explains it this way: “The LED is synonymous with creativity. It has been a revolutionary shift in all things related to lighting, greatly diversifying it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The designer of Algorithm<\/strong> (available in early 2018), Toan Nguyen<\/a>, concurs. \u201cUnlike traditional lighting, LEDs don\u2019t restrict the shape of a lamp.\u201d Rather than creating fixtures with certain lighting sources in mind, \u201cnow each lamp has its own LED, especially manufactured for it,\u201d says Antoni Arola<\/a>, who designed Flamingo<\/strong> for Vibia (available in early 2018).<\/p>\n

Designers cite LEDs\u2019 small size as a critical factor in the enhanced creativity. “Lamps can take on a more graphic character,\u201d says Az\u00faa<\/a>, “reduced in many cases to pure and essential elements.\u201d<\/p>\n

Halo<\/strong><\/a>, a model of minimalism, embodies this idea with LEDs tucked away in its understated silhouette. \u201cMiniaturizing the light source,\u201d says Jeanette Altherr of Lievore Altherr Studio, \u201cfrees us up to play with transparency and translucency, to balance the physical with the ethereal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Consuming up to 80% less electricity than incandescent or fluorescent bulbs, energy efficiency offers another design advantage. Nguyen<\/a>\u2019s Algorithm, with its striking \u201csurface of lighting points was possible only with LEDs,\u201d he states.<\/p>\n

\u201cTraditional lighting sources would have wasted a huge amount of energy and produced an exaggerated amount of unnecessary lumens and heat.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

LEDs also offer designers myriad technical benefits. \u201cThey allow for very controlled lighting of different zones while leaving other areas in the shadows,\u201d says Az\u00faa<\/a>, a precision that produces \u201cluminous, almost magical objects.\u201d This ability to \u201cdirect the temperature and intensity of the light,\u201d Altherr states, \u201chelps architects and interior designers create a narrative experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Because LEDs typically emit intense light, efficient diffusers are important, according to Nguyen<\/a>. With Algorithm<\/strong>, he placed the LEDs behind an opalescent blown-glass diffuser, deftly merging a timeless material with modern technology.<\/p>\n

\"Flamingo_14\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Arola<\/a>\u2019s Flamingo<\/strong> deploys a series of shades to diffuse the light\u2014deconstructed shapes that produce gradations of indirect light. “It\u2019s as if the light is projected on a series of screens,\u201d Arola<\/a> says, “something we couldn\u2019t even have tried with bulbs.\u201d<\/p>\n
