The versatility of the Plusminus collection is one of its most striking features. The collection designed by the Diez Studio for Vibia, includes a textile belt or belt to which different elements can be attached. Nothing more is required, thanks to the electrical current enmeshed within the ribbon’s fabric. With just a few different light fittings and other accessories a large range of designs can be created, from singular to multiple attachments. The adaptability of each individual element within the whole allows designers to tailor the lighting assemblage to match their creative visions.

Instagram Love: Flat Pendant

Lighting a table requires a special kind of lamp. One that responds to all the different activities we do there; that includes socialising, working, relaxing and of course eating. The Flat pendant light collection designed by Ichiro Iwasaki for Vibia provides an appropriate solution for every scenario. Chameleon like design that seems to adapt to the table, the space and the programme in a unique and individual way. The discs reflect the LED light, an indirect soft illumination.

A single Flat pendant reflects the geometry of the table, its indirect light placed over the centre of the circular shape provides an even and yet focal lighting.

A pair of Flat lights aligned with the table makes a distinct dining space within an open plan living area.

Flat has an uncanny capacity to take on the characteristics of its surroundings, here a sculptural table and chairs are compliment by the pendant light above.

A pair of Flat pendants spaced slightly apart to mimic the oval table below hanging low over the table surface to better reflect the light.

Flat almost disappears when observed at eye level, when seated however it reveals its disks and circular geometry appreciated from the lower eye line.

My Pick: Design Professionals Select Their Favorite New Collections

To coincide with the launch this summer of Vibia’s new US collections and accompanying catalogue, we reached out to a group of designers to learn about their top picks. Read on to find out their favorites and why they caught the eye of the experts.

“It’s simple, elegant, and strikingly understated but impactful,”

Denise Roussakis, designer at Designs + Things, LLC, in Aventura, FL, selected Sticks by Arik Levy. Fusing space, technology, and architecture, the collection’s sleek, adjustable rods offer a creative toolkit for integrating light into an interior. “It’s simple, elegant, and strikingly understated but impactful,” she explains.

“I love the abstracted effects,”

Marcio Decker, principal interior designer at Aspen Leaf Interiors in Reno, also chose Sticks. “I love the abstracted effects,” he says.

“I think this collection can change the visual landscape of a space without being too overpowering,”

Top by Ramos & Bassols is another collection debuting this summer. Defined by a pair of concentric circles, the simple spheres create a focal point that recalls a bullseye pulsing with a soft, ambient glow. Ali Siddique, a Chicago-based architectural designer, picked Top as his favorite. “I think this collection can change the visual landscape of a space without being too overpowering,” Siddique says. “It’s well integrated and helps create a rooted, moody vibe.”

“The spheres recall ‘spaces within space,’ playing within the boundaries of their own diameters. These minimalist, playful pieces are part light, part art—what’s not to love!”

Alexandra Deahl, architectural lighting designer and photographer at San Francisco’s Fieldwork Lighting Studio, favors Top as well. “It has a fantastic Turellian quality to it,” she says, referring to the light artist James Turrell. “The spheres recall ‘spaces within space,’ playing within the boundaries of their own diameters. These minimalist, playful pieces are part light, part art—what’s not to love!”

“It’s innovative and I love the rounded shape,”

For Ruth Plascencia, an interior architect and designer at Huitt-Zollars in Houston, the Flat collection stood out. Designed by Ichiro Iwasaki, it features disc-shaped diffusers positioned at different heights that form horizontal planes of ambient light. “It’s innovative and I love the rounded shape,” she says. “Very in vogue.”

Becky Zoni-McMakin, an interior designer at RZ Designs in La Mesa, CA, calls Flat “a new and a good way to add task lighting to an informal work setting.”

“Outdoor lighting is now decorative as well as functional,” he explains. “Alfresco gatherings have increased the need for attractive outdoor lighting.”

The Brisa collection, a Lievore, Altherr, Molina design, is inspired by the forest blue bell flower. Its long, slender stem topped with a conical shade captures the bloom’s bowed head and seamlessly integrates into a natural landscape. Arthur Corbin, a San Francisco-based lighting and interior designer at Illuminee, likes Brisa for its versatility. “Outdoor lighting is now decorative as well as functional,” he explains. “Alfresco gatherings have increased the need for attractive outdoor lighting.”

Biophilic Design With Vibia Lighting

From LEED buildings and sustainable materials to eco-friendly décor, design today is increasingly oriented to the environment. But the idea is not a new one: For decades designers have been inspired by “biophilia,” a Greek term that means “the love of living things.”

Biophilic design is based on the concept that humans have an inherent affinity for nature therefore their living environment should more closely connect to it for enhanced health, well-being, and productivity.

Famous examples of biophilic design include Bosco Verticale, a pair of residential high rises in Milan with terraces integrating more than 900 trees and plants.

The Jewel terminal in Singapore Changi’s airport is another example. Designed in 2019 by architect Moshe Safdie, it boasts the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, 100,000 plants, vertical gardens, and more.

An important element of biophilic design is lighting, specifically organic designs and materials, as well as systems that provide brightness through the day to mimic the natural pattern of the sun and support circadian rhythms.

Vibia, with a mission to provide better spaces for better living, offers many collections that capture biophilia concepts. Read on for a range of inspired examples in residences, hotels, restaurants, and more.

Levy’s North floor lamp illuminates the Mirror Bar in Bratislava, Slovakia, in the iconic Radisson Blu Carlton Hotel. In the bar’s seating area, North’s arms branch upwards, the plant-like look echoing the botanical theme set by the forest-green color scheme and sprawling tree dominating the center of the room.

For an office renovation in Wijk en Aalburg, The Netherlands, Dutch design studio VEVS aimed to integrate the indoors with the outside. The firm, DTI, produces butter and puff pastry so VEVS looked to the Dutch countryside dotted with agrarian barns for inspiration. They installed floor-to-ceiling windows for ample sunshine, wood beams, and furniture in organic forms.

In the conference rooms, the designers installed Arik Levy’s Wireflow pendants. The industrial black cables create a delicate three-dimensional design that’s at once graphic and transparent and a striking material contrast with the organic wood table and paneling.

In Barcelona’s Gates Hotel, natural materials like marble, brass, and walnut lend a rich, earthy ambience. At one end of the loft-like lobby, the designers installed Antoni Arola’s Palma, which connects light and vegetation in a pendant that appears to float in mid-air.

Blown-glass globes coupled with lush, cascading greenery recall an ancient hanging garden. Positioned near an oversized potted palm, it creates an interior landscape that nods to nature and enhances the hotel’s organic, relaxed sensibility.

Palma in both horizontal and vertical styles also illuminates Valencia’s Vaqueta Gastro Mercat restaurant, tucked in the back room of a greengrocer. Surrounded by undulating bamboo canes and brimming with vegetation, the pendant is positioned in several areas, creating the feeling of dining in nature.

Arola’s Palma takes pride of place in Bolpetta restaurant in Turin, Italy. The slightly flattened globe silhouette recalls the shape of the earth, an organic design that complements the wallpaper’s graphic pattern and color scheme.

The plants spill over the sides, lending an informal attitude to the space and providing a warm glow of illumination.

In an apartment in Alicante, Spain, the Palma horizontal pendant brightens the dining room. The space has a natural feel, with pale woods and botanical wallpaper.

A trio of globes interspersed with greenery fits perfectly in this setting, its horizontal profile spanning the length of table below.

Petit Epicerie, an indoor-outdoor restaurant in Liege, Belgium, also features Palma. In the airy dining room, vegetation in the horizontal pendant brings out the color of the green-grey walls.

A horizontal swath of Palma orbs draws the eye over the bar area, its black metal canopy echoing the ebony hue of the glossy tile.

Set on the sandy shores of Bahrain, a villa brings the outside in with a triple-height atrium. The sun flows through skylights, brightening stone-clad walls and bonsai trees. Suspended overhead are a pair of Wireflow pendants, Arik Levy’s contemporary interpretation of the classic chandelier.

The fixtures’ lean, black cables trace an airy outline that fills the space, yet allows the soaring ceilings and striking architecture to take center stage.

Designer Picks: Favorites from Vibia’s 2020 Catalog

On the eve of the release of Vibia’s 2020 catalog, we offered a select group of designers and architects a sneak peek to whet their appetites and find out some of their favorite products. Read on for their take on what makes the designs so special.

Pin was the pick of Michael Sestak, president of Sestak Lighting Design in Sacramento, California. An Ichiro Iwasaki design, Pin is a compelling combination of geometric shapes with LED-powered tips that glow in a gleaming nimbus of light.

Sestak noted its customizable capabilities, saying “I like the modular look and the ability to make it different in each application.”

Nigel Walker, interior designer at his eponymous firm in Vancouver, also chose Pin. Its abstract form appealed to him and he noted that “it looks more like art than functional light.”

Another Ichiro Iwasaki design, the Tube collection caught the eye of Philipp von Dalwig, principal of his Brooklyn architecture firm. Tube is formed from a network of tubes that channel light from a single connection to different shades that can be placed precisely where needed.

As von Dalwig explains, “We love the flexibility and special quality of the fixture and mounting detail.”

Puck Wall Art was the favorite of Kamilah Bermudez, project designer at Miami-based MKDA. Created by Jordi Vilardell, Puck is composed of two spheres super-imposed over one another and recalling a solar eclipse pulsing with a soft glow when illuminated.

“It’s truly a unique product both in its simplicity and beauty,” remarks Bermudez. “The light washes the wall well and looks like an art installation at the same time.”

Kelly Greenawalt, a sales agent at Lighting Solutions Inc. in Media, PA, was drawn to the Tempo collection designed by Lievore Altherr. Featuring a simple, streamlined silhouette, Tempo explores the interplay of opacity, luminance, and transparency.

Greenawalt appreciates how it “mixes beautiful glass and metal finishes” and is available in a choice of wall sconce or pendant styles.

Instagram Love: Visitors View Vibia HQ

In 2019, Vibia opened it new headquarters in Gavà, close to Barcelona’s city center. At 170,000 Sqft., the sprawling site includes its corporate offices, a showroom that displays Vibia lighting collections in a gallery setting, and a state-of-the-art factory.

To date, Vibia has welcomed almost 1,000 visitors from around the world to the new space. The response has been enthusiastic, with many many photographing their favorite designs and vignettes.
