One Year of Array: Making an Icon

First unveiled at Euroluce 2023, Array has quickly become one of Vibia’s most iconic collections. An inaugural collaboration between Vibia and designer Umut Yamac, the collection manipulates layers of technically-processed thread between two metal rings to form majestic three-dimensional volumes. The interplay of light and thread transforms perceptions of weight and depth, offering a unique spatial experience.

Array is a culmination of experiments exploring the potential of thread to create kinetic volumes of light through tension.Combining soft downlighting with an alluring upwards glow, a hidden light source washes the threads from below to produce a spectacular gradient effect.

Interested in how objects are activated by their surroundings through movement, Yamac creates the perception of ‘life’, evoking an emotional connection. Activated by the presence of the viewer, the layered threads create an interference pattern, shimmering as light passes through.

With thread evoking traditional craftsmanship and warm, protective associations, the sleek, industrial rings create a complementary visual language. In terms of palette, the matte black aluminium is softened by the red, green and beige threads, lending an earthy richness as they interact with the light.

Array carries a sense of mystery. It suggests a form without completing it, instead letting the viewer complete it in their mind’s eye. The voids between the weave create a sense of translucency which means you can layer up multiple fixtures without feeling obtrusive. Instead, the airy volumes become a liminal architectural element.

This quality makes Array equally well-suited for grand commercial spaces as for intimate residential interiors. Available in multiple sizes—some nearly two meters tall—the collection enhances spaces with its ethereal form and alluring illumination.
