Circus Solo complements the authentic cuisine of Silo restaurant, Medellín

The 5 Sólidos studio developed this interior design project for Silo restaurant, located in the Colombian city of Medellín, with the aim of complementing a gastronomic experience based on the honesty of its ingredients. To achieve that goal the design exploits the use of natural materials and a combination of different lamps from Vibia’s Circus Solo collection. The result generates a dialogue between three constituent parts: cuisine, design and light, precisely calibrated, balanced and sensual, highlighting its essential qualities.

Within the entrance to the restaurant the eye is drawn to the timber finish of the sliding door and the wood panelling of the walls that acts as backdrop to the Silo signage, welcoming visitors and giving them a taster of the warm and sensual ambience that defines this establishment. Only the corporate red, powerful yet subtle, used for the lettering, the door handle and specific elements of the interior are allowed to deviate from the monochromatic harmony of the space.

The restaurant is located within the Wake Biohotel in the city of Medellín, Colombia, organised around the farm-to-table concept that celebrates authenticity, sustainability, and a connection to the land. The goal of the project’s author, 5 Sólidos studio, is for this culinary philosophy to be reflected in the interior design, highlighting the quality of the light and the architectural design through clean lines and organic style that conveys the purity of nature.

Restaurant diners at Silo can enjoy real and honest cuisine that connects to the origins of each and every ingredient, an experience that is enriched by the setting featuring pure forms, quality materials, an earthy colour scheme and natural fibres crafted by local artisans. And as part of this dialogue between the space and the gastronomy the Circus Solo collection adds a particular spatial lighting to the recipe, speaking the same language, based on its principles of calm, precision and authenticity.

Designer Antoni Arola opted for the hanging version from the collection, given that it allows for the combination of point, focused or diffuse lighting to accentuate the more organic details of the interior and complement the honest authentic culinary experience, even highlighting the textures of individual culinary dishes.

These adaptable lighting effects offered by the collection can be aligned with the functional requirements of the restaurant, organised over two floors, facilitating the creation of different levels of intimacy without affecting the overall composure of the space.

The light from Circus Solo is softly filtered through the natural fibres of the hanging installations within the central area of the restaurant, establishing a visual rhythm that contrasts with the slope of the ceiling radiating a sensation of calm and movement all at the same time.

In addition, a private events space is located on the upper level of the structure extending the spatial narrative further, enhanced by the warm and versatile lighting that encourages conversation. And there’s a hidden speakeasy, with a more intimate and enigmatic ambience, where the lighting takes centre stage, thanks to its adjustable intensity and contrast.

This project clearly demonstrates how Circus Solo goes far beyond its basic lighting function, capable of transforming the light as an exercise in composition. In this way it allows interior design professionals to create different atmospheres that evolve with the space, and where each light fitting becomes a gesture, and each beam a note that adds to the whole.
